Mission Statement
Akonua and Kwama Children’s Literacy Foundation is a Canadian Registered Charity with the Vision
To establish and maintain a Community Public Library, provide scholarships for the needy students, and build computer labs for high schools in Mankessim, Mfantseman District, C/R. Ghana. Africa.
The library will provide a direct service to Mankessim community. The Local population is about 20,000 with four High Schools in the area but has no Library. The Mfantseman district capital, Saltpond also has no Library. Thus a district with a population of about 152,858 has no library in it’s district capital therefore even with the establishment of this community library, some people may travel long distances from surrounding villages to use this facility. Infact due to this dire need, this project responds directly to the community needs
The Scholarship Programme and the Library Project would help us to educate some of the people who say women would be married so their education is not important, as well as those under the notion that a child belongs to the maternal family so the father could refuse to be responsible for his own child. This is the prevelent thought of many people in developing countries who feel the same. For this Foundation, both genders will have equal opportunities in the fulfilment of their cherished dreams.
The Foundation has community support letters commending importance of such projects from the Chief Executive of Mfantseman Municipal Assembly, Hon. Henry Kweku Hayfron and Dr. John C . Hagan a retired University Professor. 1) University of Cape Coast 1968-1981 and
2) University of Nigeria 1981-1987.
The foundation is appealing to Mankessim citizens home and abroad to assist in any way towards the success of this cause. Okurantsir Amanfo we need your financial support for this project and the corporations we have contacted will match the amount in our accounts. Our Queen mother, The Municipal Assembly and some corporations are supporting us, so let us get ready to "Rock and roll" with the building of the Public Library but first your donations are needed. Also if you are not from Mankessim but moved by the good work that we have started, your donation is welcome and will help bring a change in Mankessim. Since this Foundation is a Canadian Registered Charity at the end of the fiscal year we file our tax returns with Canada Revenue Agency.
Our special thanks to the Queenmother of Mankessim Nana Ama Amissah III, Hon.Henry Kweku Hayfron the Municipal Chief Executive Mfantseman Municipal Assembly, Dr John C. Hagan retired Professor of English University of Cape Coast, for all their support towards this charity. In addition we would also like to thank the elders of Pakesedo Nsona Royal family and elders of Gyasehene Royal family of Mankessim. Our gratitude goes also to Henk and Joann Derix; Otto and Rie Hammer all in Calgary Alberta, and Elder Isaac Ayidan Sam of Mankessim for their continued support.
About Us
The founder of the "Children's Literacy Foundation", the Pobee family landed in Calgary on August 26th, 1988. Mr Orleans Kodwo Pobee joined Calgary Chamber of Commerce in 1993 and Canadian Association of Petroleum Production Accounting in 2001. Early in life, Orleans lost his mother at the age of three months. Now Orleans is a grandfather, passionate about fulfilling the educational dreams of the young children in Mankessim. He has had no hesitation in spending substantial part of the family's life savings on the future of the children in Mankessim.
On another note; Pobee's own children have travelled to Malawi, Uganda and Ghana to work in orphange, maternity home and other community development projects. Like their mama and papa, they are also very passionate about giving back.
If we all play our part, this is a small token of appreciation giving back to the community, the love that the people gave us some years ago. This proves that it takes the whole village to raise a child.
