Scholarship Pledge Letter - Registered Canadian Charity # 84275 6264 RR0001
To give the children, our future leaders, the tools and the knowledge that they may need for a better and healthy future.
For all of us conversant with the Ghana educational scenario, it is apparent that the education sector has benefited tremendously from Government subventions to public education institutions. The country still enjoys one of the highest secondary school enrolment rates in Africa. The Government policy of “Universal Primary and Secondary Education” has enabled many students complete Secondary schools.
It is at the “post secondary level” where the Government, whilst subsidizing significantly the costs also requires students to pay for “tuition, books and living expenses”. Students can get government loans of about a third of the cost. With these resulting higher fees at “ post secondary Institutions” many parents are not been able to send their children to colleges and universities because of their poor financial situations.
As a background, the total cost of education are much higher before government education subsidies, but students are only required to pay CAD $300 per year at these Universities and Colleges. Students get $100 loan and the balance of $200 is the amount requested from our esteemed donors.
Ghana Universities rank amongst some of the best in Africa and graduates have been able to get well respectable jobs within and outside the country. Graduates have also been accepted for post graduate studies in some of the “most reputable universities” in the UK, North America, Australia and other countries.
The Scholarship program identifies and sponsors students from the Mankessim community in Ghana to attend “post-secondary Institutions“. We have developed competitive selection criteria and already awarded a total of 11 scholarships to students in “2009 and 2010” at different colleges and Universities. AKCLF follows up constantly progress of the students through regular contacts with the Local leaders and Institutions Staff, through it‘s “Liaison Office“ which also monitors academic progress of the students.
As at the present, AKCLF scholarship as well as capital, recurrent and staffing costs are fully sustained through the sponsor.
Like any not-for-profit organisation, AKCLF can only succeed in its mission, if there is collective commitment and if it receives financial assistance from others who have Ghana at heart and who also believe in AKCLF mission. Financing of education costs in Ghana is extremely inexpensive and from your support of CAD 800 ( yearly CAD 300 less CAD 100 student‘s Government loan); you will enable one deserving student to complete four years* of University/college education. Or you can finance students already on roll whose disbursement need to be done this year end.
For any financial support received, AKCLF will individually recognise publicly all donors through mass media or at public functions so that Ghanaians in particular and others in general see your gesture as examples to emulate. We would also send to the donors the names of the student and their family profile to substantiate that the support have been received by very needy students.
Donors would be regularly apprised on the individual progress reports of the students they are supporting.
As a policy of complete transparency, we will also send at the end of each year, copies of our audited accounts from a reputable auditing firm in Calgary, to the sponsors.
I look forward to receiving your pledges.
* University programmes at Ghana Institutions of Higher Learning are normally four years, post graduate programmes two years, medicine/dentistry and other medicine faculty programmes five years. Colleges are three years..
